Joachim Wassenberg was a religious brother, a missionary of the Society of the Divine Word. He was sent to New Guinea and was serving at a place called Kanengera before and during the Second World War. He was bayoneted by a Japanese soldier and died, probably at Marieneberg Mission, on the Sepik River. He is believed to be buried there. He died on 31 May 1944 at the age of 54.
