DEATH OF MRS J McAULIFFE

The news of the death of Mrs John McAuliffe, which occurred at the Commercial Hotel, Castlemaine, on Tuesday morning, will be received with feelings of regret by her many, friends in this district. She had been suffering from heart troubles for a considerable time, and death was due to syncope.
The deceased lady was a daughter of the late Mr James Gorey, of Heidelberg, where she was born on January 26, 1843. She was married by the late Very Rev. Dean Geoghegan at St Mary's, Kyneton, May 29, 1859. Her husband, the late Mr John McAuliffe, died on November 23, 1910. For 51 years Mr and Mrs McAuliffe resided on their farm at North Redesdale, where they reared a large family of sons and daughters in comfort and respectability.
Mrs McAuliffe was of a reminiscent disposition, and gave many interesting accounts of the early days of Heidelberg.
Mr Brown, the Australian author, who wrote under the pen name of "Rolf Bolderwood," was born at Heidelberg, and Mrs McAuliffe was well acquainted with him and other members of the family.
Mrs McAuliffe was the mother of seven sons and five daughters. One son, Constable E. J. McAuliffe, of Echuca, died in May last. Mrs Ada McMahon, of the Commercial Hotel, Castlemaine, who died quite recently, was a daughter. Six sons and four daughters survive. One of the sons (Thomas) is a plain-clothes constable at Williamstown.
John and Maurice are carrying on the farm at North Redesdale. William is in the employ of the Australian Forge and Engineering Co at Williamstown and James is in Sydney.
The other brother Cornelius is at the Commercial Hotel, Castlemaine. The daughters are Mrs N. Hanrahan, of Barfold; Mrs A. Anderson, of Castlemaine, and Misses E. and A. McAuliffe. of the Commercial Hotel, Castlemaine. Mrs McAuliffe was a sister to Mrs Olive, of Malmsbury road, and to the late Mr James Gorey, of Cohuna, who formerly carried on the business of a blacksmith at North Redesdale for many years and occupied a seat at the Metcalfeshire Council for a term as representative for the North Riding.
Two brothers survive — Mr Edward Gorey, who has an extensive orchard near Shepparton, and Mr John Gorey, of Prahran.
During her lengthy residence in the Redesdale district, Mrs McAuliffe won the esteem and respect of all who knew her.
She was a model wife and mother, strictly upright and honest, and of a bright and benevolent disposition.
Hers is the third death in the family within five months, and much sympathy is felt for the relatives in their many and sad bereavements.
The interment took place in the Kyneton Cemetery yesterday. The funeral, which was largely attended, followed the arrival of the midday train from Castlemaine.
The coffin-bearers were Messrs J. Gorey, W. McAuliffe. T. McAuliffe and M. Cahill (nephews) and Messrs N. Hanrahan and A. Anderson (sons-in-law).
The officiating clergyman was the Rev. Father O'Callaghan. Mr J. Cuddihy had charge of the funeral arrangements.
